2. Biographical Sketch

a) Place, Time, and Customs

Elijah lived in the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the 9th century BC. It was a time when many Israelites had turned away from God and worshipped false gods, especially Baal. King Ahab and Queen Jezebel encouraged this idolatry, leading the people away from the covenant with God.

b) Family and Background

  • Name: Elijah
  • Birthplace: Tishbe in Gilead.
  • The Bible gives little information about his parents or family.
  • He was a prophet chosen by God to call His people back to true worship.

c) Major Life-Transforming Event

One of the most significant moments in Elijah's life was the contest on Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged 450 prophets of Baal to prove whose God was real. When Elijah prayed, God sent fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice, showing that the Lord alone is the true God. This event strengthened the faith of many people and restored honor to God's name.

d) Relationship with God

Elijah's life was centered on prayer and obedience to God. He trusted God completely, even during times of danger and loneliness. After his victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah became discouraged and fled into the wilderness. There, God comforted him and spoke to him not through wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper. This taught Elijah that God's presence is often found in silence and prayer.

e) Achievements and Contributions

  • Fearlessly defended the worship of the one true God.
  • Performed miracles through God's power.
  • Encouraged the people of Israel to return to God.
  • Served as a model of courage, faith, and perseverance.
  • Mentored Elisha, who continued his prophetic mission.
  • Was taken into heaven without experiencing death, making him one of the greatest prophets of the Old Testament.

Elijah is also remembered in the New Testament. He appeared with Moses during the Transfiguration of Jesus, showing his importance in God's plan of salvation.

3. Key Bible Verse

"How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him."
