2. Biographical Sketch
a) Place and Time
- Esther lived in the Persian Empire during the reign of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I), around the 5th century BC.
- She was a Jewish girl living in exile with her people.
b) Family and Background
- Name: Esther
- Hebrew name: Hadassah
- Raised by her cousin Mordecai after the death of her parents.
- Became Queen of Persia.
c) Turning Point
When Haman planned to destroy the Jewish people, Esther risked her life by approaching the king without being summoned. Her courage and faith helped save her people.
d) Relationship with God
Although God's name is not directly mentioned in the Book of Esther, Esther showed deep faith through prayer, fasting, and trust in God's guidance. She relied on God during a time of great danger.
e) Contributions
- Saved the Jewish people from destruction.
- Became a model of courage, faith, and leadership.
- Her actions are remembered in the Jewish feast of Purim.
